I’m never very happy when I write a negative review of a book for publication, even if it’s deserved. This is not to say that I don’t trash things with abandon in private, and I love reading someone else’s snarky, brilliant put-down. I’m going to have to dig some of my favorites up and post them. Meanwhile…
Julia Keller writes about bad reviews in a recent Chicago Tribune column: “… there should be a small part of every critic, I believe, that grieves quietly each time a creative product is less than it ought to be.”
Nor are negative reviews exempt from the empty phrases that plague the good review (the fabulous Bingo card is from Michelle Kerns’ list of the Top 20 Most Annoying Book Reviewer cliches.) Over at GalleyCat, readers were invited to contribute their own favorite over-used review put-downs to Janice Harayda’s list from her site, One-Minute Book Reviews.
