Thanks, Nancy -- I just finished reading your piece on Rebecca Reeder-Hunt (http://www.magazine.tcu.edu/Magazine/Article.aspx?ArticleId=668) and loved it. I'm sure anyone interested in Janisse Ray's book would see the troubling similarities in what's happening to orangutan habitat: "Large-scale timber and oil palm plantations, illegal logging, and forest fires that grow more intense as the climate changes are wreaking havoc in Borneo, where less than 20 percent of the forests of Central Kalimantan remain free from threat."

"Ray boldly seduces us into joining this critical and much-needed revolution." And with reviews like this, you do as much by tempting us to read Ray's book and join the war "...against the loss of our stories, our history, our connections with each other..."
Great review, Ms. Webb!

ps - the proposed Walmart is in Decatur at Suburban Plaza. Avondale Estates denied them access within city limits in 2005 and won.

The Plaza is in 'greater' Decatur in Dekalb county, so it doesn't fall within that city's limits, unfortunately. But thanks for the thought!

It sure does a number on you to watch a neighborhood go from affordable to gentrified, as houses no one you know can ever buy go up and trees that have sheltered it all from noise and extreme heat/cold changes go down. I saw it turn Brookhaven into a showroom, and I'm glad I was long gone when the WalMart went in on Peachtree.

Even here, in leafy Sagamore Hills, the removal of a next-door neighbor's pines, front and back, has left our house colder in the winter and hotter in the summer. The noise baffle is disappearing; at night, traffic sounds no longer die down.

But for all these complaints, nothing could compare to an entire town under the big boot of a corporate coal company. Like Big Oil (or Big Anything), they have no soul, no plan for the future except profits. And it's clear that none of this -- not the WalMart in Avondale or the restructuring of Brookhaven -- would happen in an area where wealthy people live. The vulnerable can always fight back, but not without numbers and solidarity to balance the power. That's what the unions knew so well.

And speaking of fights, may your campaign against WalMart turn in Avondale's favor!

I'm dealing with the transformation of place over here in Avondale and what progress means on the ground; the loss of hundred year old trees and relocated birds. It's a sad thing to watch.
